Since my first visit to Malaysia in 1994, I have always been curious about Langkawi, an island near the border with Thailand. Dos my friends told me it would be empty because of the rainy season. So I've never been there. The suddenly a phone call while I was in Bangkok has the opportunity to live in Langkawi opened.
I had arrived in October 2006, almost the beginning of the season. I flew to Kuala Lumpur with Gulf Air and Langkawi with Air Asia. The airport is small, small shops and cafes, many banks hire cars and taxis. It's wise to rent a car in Langkawi because taxi is more expensive than larger cities. Also, there is no public transport, if you want to move, you need a taxi. It is very simple to much for a small car or to find a budget a little more than a jeep Perodua. More luxury cars are available, but I do not think that this is necessary.
There are many hotels and resorts in Langkawi. Most of them are stationed around Pantai Cenang. But if you want to live there, it does not take a lot of choices.
If you want to live in Langkawi, you may want a condo. There are 5 choices; Century Surya, which is west of Kuah town nearby, almost in the middle of the city, Kondo Istana, CHOGM Villa, that's what I decided to return to Sri Lagenda is exactly the opposite of CHOGM Villa and in a very distant between Pantai Cenang and Pantai Kok, Perdana Beach Resort. Auch finden Sie Malaiisch Häuser um Pantai Cenang oder andere Bereiche. It is really difficult to find a decent and generally most of them need many repairs.
Prices vary between 1000RM (~ $ 290) and 3500rm (~ $ 1000). Kondo Istana and Century Suria is very pretty, but they have a pool of poor and the prices are high compared to others. I recommend that CHOGM Villa is a beautiful place. Apartment quality is the same as the others, area, and has a very nice pool.
For shopping there is not much choice. You can go to Langkawi Fair is the largest shopping mall now. You can make a good supermarket, you'll also find numerous shops, where to buy souvenirs, Nice, etc. Most of the furniture of good quality and big name stores are here. There are also Langkawi Parade at the western entrance of the city. It is the poorest version of Langkawi Fair. But it has a large area on the ground floor, where you can find many goods. Outside of these centers, you can buy Trimula on cell phones, some electronics and home accessories such as curtains, blinds.
Eating in Langkawi is really good. There are many possibilities. You can find almost any kind of favoritism here, Thai, Japanese, Malay, Chinese, Indian, Italian and Russian. Under the state tourism, the island has restaurants of very high quality. But long term, you need to know where to buy products to cook yourself. Other than buying on the market, there is a wet market in Padang Matsirat, is that of the Langkawi International Airport. Here you can fruits and vegetables and fish, crabs and lobsters.
Entering and leaving the island is a small problem. Penang is close, you can go by ferry but the ferry after hours round trip to Penang is not at all helpful. From the airport you can fly almost anywhere. Like any other country in Southeast Asia, the flights are really cheap. If you want to go to the mainland by car, you must send your car a day before with a freight that to take it. If you bought your car in Langkawi because of its free status, you can click on the mainland not more than a month.
Once you have your own car or by bike, it's really easy to find your way around Langkawi. The people are very friendly and most of them speak English. The foreign community of the island is really big, and they are really willing to help.
